The Collection of Books
When the Foundation of the
Works of C.G. Jung was established in 2007 the books of
Jung's private library also became property of the
foundation. According to its objectives, the foundation is
responsible to preserve these materials and to make them
accessible for scientific researches. Jung's library grew
during his life and became a mirror of his research
interests. When he died in 1961, the library contained about
4'000 books.
The main content of Jungs private library was contemporary
literature of the 19th and 20th century, mainly about
medicine, psychiatry, psychology and philosophy.
Additionally there are a great number of books on antique
cultures, gnosis, christian symbols, eastern religion,
ethnology and occultism. The library also contains a
collection of about 300 rare books (printed before 1800) on
alchemy, theurgy and kabbala, as well as antique literature
on dreams, writings of church fathers and of the latin and
greek classic.
Library Project
In order to maintain the
library a project concerned with the deacidification and
restoration of the works has started. Furthermore, a project
on the digitalization of the collection and old rare items
is currently implemented together with the Library of the
ETH in Zurich and with the financial support of the Dr
Donald C. Cooper Fund, which aims to facilitate the
psychology at the ETH in Zurich. The results of this project
are published under e-rara.ch:
